WOMEN INTO TECHNOLOGY
Women hoping to return to work or a course of studies are faced with special obstacles such as childcare, low confidence and lack of up to date technical skills.
Fife Women’s Technology Centre has been helping women to overcome many of these problems for over 17 years.
We provide part time training in New Technology and Career and Personal Development. This training is delivered in a supportive atmosphere to a high standard.
By the end of the Course, trainees will have had the opportunity to gain NQ modules in a variety of subjects, which will assist them in gaining employment or accessing further or higher education.
To be accepted on this training programme, women must be over 18, unemployed (or working part time) and committed to a part time Course. No academic qualifications are necessary and those on benefit should not be affected.
The Course is for women living in the Fife area, particularly in areas of high unemployment; for lone parents; for women over 40 returning to work; for women of ethnic origin and for women with disabilities.
The course is run on a part time basis and is mainly in line with current school terms. A work placement may be provided with a local company or industry towards the end of the training programme.
TRAINEES WITH CHILDREN
…will be helped by Administrative staff in the Centre, who will advise on appropriate methods of childcare. All costs will be met by the Centre.
Assistance may also be given with transport costs.
ECDL AND ADMINISTRATION
The ECDL is an internationally recognised qualification that covers the key concepts of computing and it’s practical applications in the workplace. It also recognises the existing ability of people who can competently use a computer but do not have any formal computer related qualifications.
ECDL is broken down into seven modules. Potential candidates are required to complete all seven modules in order to gain the qualification. Each assessment is a short course in it’s own right and is not directly linked to any of the others.
The course runs for 6 months, 2 days per week and covers:
• Basic Concepts of Information Technology (IT)
• Using a Computer and Managing Files
• Word Processing
• Spreadsheets
• Databases and Filing Systems
• Presentation and Drawing
• Information Network Services
You will be given a logbook at the start of the course. This book records the skills you demonstrate in each of the 7 computer related modules. As you pass each module successfully, the corresponding skill is logged in your book.
On completion of all 7 modules, your logbook will be sent to the national ECDL office at the British Computer Society where it will be exchanged for a European Computer Driving Licence.
Administration training (including Publisher and Sage) will also be given during this two day course.

CISCO NETWORKING - Local Academy
The Internet is touching every part of our lives – the way we work, live, play and learn. Behind this revolution, you’ll find CISCO systems. Virtually all Internet traffic passes across CISCO technology.
Technology is revolutionising almost every aspect of our lives. The only thing holding us back is knowledge. Companies the world over need talented people (male and female) with the skills and know-how to drive their businesses forward into the Internet economy.
The Cisco Networking Academy Program was started in 1997 to help students gain the real world skills so in demand in the Internet economy. The curriculum combines the theory and practice of designing, developing and implementing the networks that drive modern organisations. And beyond this, it teaches the teamwork skills that are essential for success in today’s market.
We are a local CISCO Academy, and liaise with Adam Smith College (who are a Regional Academy), to provide students with the opportunity to acquire skills they’ll need to compete in the Internet economy.
The Programme consists of four semesters, will run over a one year period, and is designed to teach students the skills needed to design, build and maintain small to medium size networks. This provides them with the opportunity to enter the workforce and/or further their education and training in the electronic communication or computer networking fields.
